CT Jamboree Fundraising Mountain Bike Ride in Colorado

Dear Friends,

On August 2nd and 3rd I will be participating in a 90 mile organized fundraising Mountain Bike ride along the Colorado Trail from Molas Pass to the town of Durango. The course follows mountain trails in the 10,000 ft range along ridges, over passes, through streams, and also with 60 other riders. But Why?

The CT Jamboree (http://www.ctjamboree.com/) strives to broaden awareness of Multiple Sclerosis and generate financial support for Colorado residents affected by this complex illness. By seeking the unique physical challenge that unfolds on the Colorado Trail, riders and their supporters will raise awareness and funding to help people with MS and their families gain access to education designed to enrich and enable their lives. Also, in recognition of the amazing natural environment in which the ride takes place, a percentage of contributions are directed towards organizations that maintain the Colorado Trail for future generations. The main recipient of funding from this ride is The Huega Center (http://www.heuga.org/). They really make a difference in the way folks live with MS through their educational outreach and the attitude that one can live an "active" life with MS, not just suffer through it.

Sherab rode last year (http://picasaweb.google.com/sherabella/CTJamboree)
and I was on the support team. I got the bug to participate this year and feel very passionate about participating in the fundraising efforts. Thank you all for you support!

Donate Here - http://www.active.com/donate/CT08/adolphi

Message from Prescott College President, Dan Garvey:
Prescott College feels great sadness for the passing of Virginia Carol Kennedy, known to us as Carol. Our hearts go out to her family and friends in this time of loss.

Carol served the College as a faculty member from 1989 to the year 2000, and played a significant leadership role in her time at the College as coordinator of the Human Development Program. In the past decade she has taught occasional classes in our residential Degree Bachelor of Arts program and served as a mentor to graduate students. Others knew her as a therapist and as an artist and printmaker who showed her work at Yavapai College, Van Gogh's Ear and other local venues.

Carol was a strong advocate for progressive, interdisciplinary learning. She was a thoughtful and caring teacher who was greatly valued by her students. She was a gifted and generous artist, educator, and friend. She will be deeply missed.

Research Position

(Entry-Level Researcher Position with Three to Six-Month Apprenticeship)

The Building Justice campaign, a joint effort of the AFL-CIO and several building trades unions, is changing the face of construction work in the Southwest. Thousands of construction workers toil away in Southwestern cities in unsafe working conditions, with little or no access to health care, and few rights on the job site. Some Southwestern construction workers, most of them Latino immigrants, make a fraction of many of their counterparts. Workers are joining together to improve the industry, and better their working conditions.

The campaign is a strategic effort in support of construction workers, to assist them in achieving the changes they want in their workplaces and driving up standards for all workers.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Researcher compiles information on companies, industries and issues. The Researcher also assists the campaign in other capacities such as worker and community outreach and helping plan worksite actions. S/he also assists in campaign strategy development.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Under the direction and supervision of senior campaign staff, a Researcher's duties fall into three main categories:

1. Performs comprehensive and efficient searches of public information from a variety of sources to provide quantitative and qualitative information for company and industry profiles and issue development.

2. Monitors press and other public documents on assigned companies, industries and issues.

3. Gathers information from workers, employers, government agencies, courts, press, Internet, organizers, and other sources. To a limited extent, the Researcher is expected to develop and cultivate new sources of information.

B. Communications Duties

            1. Exhibits strong writing skills to prepare internal memos, and to draft leaflets, testimony, letters, fact sheets, and other documents for eventual public uses.

            2. Effectively communicates purposes for information gathering.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Familiarity with and an ability to navigate the Internet.

Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software.

Ability to work under deadline.

HOW TO APPLY

This position is open until filled. It consists of a paid three to six-month apprenticeship, that when completed successfully, will lead to an entry-level strategic researcher position with a competitive salary and benefits.

Environmental Biologist Postions, San Diego, CA

There are some job openings for several Environmental Biologists with the City of San Diego that could really use PC grads. Due to the recent fires, there is a great deal of concern about the brush in wildland areas throughout the City, and the State and Feds are starting to pump money in that direction. It is critical that the right people oversee the program, or great harm can be done to these important habitats. Here's the link:

I have recently started a new venture built around a research method called "Ethnographic Futures Research."
Below are a few details. If you're interested in joining this training, please let me know. This is our first offering of this training, so we're offering it on a cost-recovery basis.

Grand Canyon Threatened by toxic mining.

According to The New York Times, Vane Minerals, a British mining company, has received a permit to start exploratory drilling three miles from the lookout point on the canyon's southern rim. At the seven Vane sites, the company will be drilling for uranium.

As you might know, hardrock mining for minerals such as gold and uranium can be a terribly destructive practice, leaving behind giant open pits and contaminating water with cyanide and strong acids.

Last year, I helped pass a measure in the House of Representatives that would ban mining where waste could contaminate national parks. The Senate has not taken the same step yet, in part because companies like Vane want to get while the getting's good. That mentality, along with record-high gold prices and increased demand for uranium are fueling a modern day gold rush.

The rush just got a little more rushed.

I hope that you'll take action to stop Vane. Copy this link into your browser to send a message today:

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/preservation/vane-minerals?id4=ES

I hope you can help and just send a quick email. I'll keep working to try and pass protections through the senate.

best,

Are you looking for a PC Alumni Career Mentor?

LOOKING FOR A CAREER MENTOR?
PRESCOTT COLLEGE
ALUMNI SHARING KNOWLEDGE
CAREER NETWORK

What is a ASK Career Mentor and why should I have one?
In the Prescott College ASK Career Mentor Program, a mentor is someone to assist you as you make career-related decisions. You may consider having a mentor for the following reasons:

•Receive relevant, firsthand information about a particular career field.
•Explore unknown career paths.
•Determine how a specific career may match your interests, lifestyle and future plans.
•Begin to develop a network of contacts in a particular career field.

The primary purpose of this program is to build relationships between Prescott College alumni and students through the sharing of career insights and accomplishments.

The Prescott College ASK Career Network is not to be used for business solicitation purposes nor is it to be used as a network for job placement. Any user who misuses ASK will be banned from participating in the program.

A Prescott College Perspective
Prescott College ASK Mentors understand your competence area, the educational mission of Prescott College, experiential education, and your needs to find a career where you can apply your knowledge. Each ASK Mentor’s profile includes employer information and career experiences. Feel free to ask career-related questions and share your ideas with your mentor. You might even want to share your PC life experiences.
How to Request an ASK Mentor

Email the ASK Program Coordinator, Marie Smith at msmith@prescott.edu or call 877-350-2100 X4502. You may also come in for an office visit Monday – Friday between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Alumni Relations is located in the Alder Building #208. Ask Advises will be required to fill out contact information and a brief questionnaire.
